The Honolulu Fire Department is warning of fraudulent calls offering claiming to represent the Fire Department and offering to install home fire extinguishers.

Fire officials said that the department has not authorized anyone to solicit or install fire extinguishers or any other fire protection service. The calls are believed to be a scam and have been referred to the police department.

Anyone with information on the calls is asked to contact police or CrimeStoppers Honolulu at 955-8300.

The department does provide smoke alarms through the Smoke Alarms For Everyone program (SAFE), a free service that installs smoke alarms in local residents’ homes.

However, residents sign up for their free smoke alarm at community events where they can speak with firefighters. There is no phone solicitation.

Fire Department personnel who install smoke alarms in homes will always be in uniform with proper identification.
