LOS ANGELES >> A man who police say shot and killed a woman at Atwater Village before being shot by Los Angeles police has died.

The Los Angeles Times reports that coroner’s officials say 39-year-old Carlos Joseph Wilhelm died at a hospital overnight after officers shot him Wednesday night. He is accused of killing 50-year-old Lorraine Gonzalez.

Police say they responded to Gonzalez’s home Wednesday after gunshots were reported. An officer in a Los Angeles Police Department helicopter overhead spotted the man who was later identified as Wilhelm with a rifle in front of the house. As officer approached the suspect he was shot.

Wilhelm was taken to the hospital where he died at about midnight.

The shooting will be reviewed by the LAPD, the districts attorney’s office and the Police Commission.
