Honolulu police give awards to top officers

A Honolulu police officer was awarded the department’s Bronze Medal of Valor for rescuing a truck driver in March from a burning truck.

Police Chief Louis Kealoha presented Officer Michael McMillen of District 1 (Central Honolulu) with the Bronze Medal of Valor, the department’s third-highest award at the department’s second quarter awards ceremony Sept. 23.

In March, McMillen, who was off duty at the time, broke the truck’s rear window and rescued the driver who was trapped inside. The truck caught fire on Wilikina Drive.

Other awards presented at the Ala Moana Beach Park’s McCoy Pavilion Auditorium, naming Officer Brandon Kaholokula of District 5 (Kalihi) was named Employee of the Quarter.

From April through June, Kaholokula responded to 500 calls for service. Kaholokula also made 32 arrests — including nine felony arrests. As a field training officer, he also has trained three new officers.

The Department’s Community Affairs Division was named unit of the quarter. The unit is responsible for planning ceremonies and major community events throughout the year. Members of the unit are Lt. Eric Yosemori: Sgts. Don Fujishima and Sterling Solusod; Officers Christopher Caravalho, Matthew Chang, Legaee Fatu Jr., Benjamin Lloyd, and Nalei Sooto; and Glen Arcalas, and Eddie Croom.

Officer Nicholas Tiglao of District 5 was presented with the certificate of merit. In April, he responded to a dropped call at a home in Kalihi. He found an unconscious man and saved him from taking his own life.
