An Aiea family of five escaped a fire that caused an estimated $20,000 damage to their home and its contents this afternoon.

The Honolulu Fire Department responded to the 5:34 p.m. fire at 98-424 Kaonohi St. with nine fire companies staffed with 28 personnel.

The first arriving companies saw heavy smoke coming from a second-story window at the three-story multiple-family complex, fire Capt. David Jenkins said in a news release.

Firefighters supressed the flames and prevented further spread by using foam, bringing the fire under control by 5:44 p.m. and extinguishing the fire by 6 p.m.

Fire investigators determined the fire was caused by overcooked food.

Damage was estimated at $15,000 to the structure and $5,000 to its contents.

The family will stay with other family members for the night, Jenkins said.
