A 31-year-old Kalihi man died today after he was shot either by himself or an officer near Dole Middle School, following a police pursuit from West Oahu and forcing the middle school into lockdown.

Police Maj. Larry Lawson said the incident began about 12:30 p.m. today when the man’s family reported him missing and distraught.

Police spotted him about 2:15 p.m. near Honokai Hale and began pursuing him and saw the man flashing a weapon, Lawson said.

Officers continued following the man on H-1 freeway toward Kalihi and up Kamehameha IV Road where the man stopped in the street fronting Dole Middle School about 2:45 p.m.

Lawson said the man fired a weapon and one officer fired a weapon. He did not know which gunshot killed the man.

A neighbor said the man lived across from the school.

Lawson said the man was taken to the Queen’s Medical Center, where he died.
