A new large northwest swell prompted officials at the National Weather Service to issue a new high surf warning for most islands and a high surf advisory for Hawaii island this morning.

For all islands except Hawaii island, forecasters expect surf along north shores to reach 12 to 18 feet today, building to 18 to 25 feet this evening and continuing through Friday. West-facing shores are expected to see 9- to 12-foot waves today, increasing to 15 to 20 feet this evening, and also continuing through Friday.

The high surf warning is in effect through 6 p.m. Friday.

Weather officials advise beachgoers today and Friday to expect strong breaking waves, shore break, and strong longshore and rip currents that will make swimming hazardous.

The high surf advisory for the Kona coast of Hawaii island is scheduled to go into effect at 6 p.m. today and run through 6 p.m. Friday.

Surf up to 8 to 12 feet is expected in the advisory area.

Also on the Big Island, six beach parks remained closed today as officials clean up debris washed up from the swell Tuesday and Wednesday. The parks are: Richardsons Beach Park, Leleiwi Beach Park, Kealoha Beach Park, Carlsmith Beach Park, Onekahakaha Beach Park and Coconut Island.
