Tradewinds should return overnight as high temperature records set

Tradewinds are starting to return on Hawaii island and Maui and should bring some relief to Oahu and Kauai overnight.

But not before giving western islands another day of hot, humid weather.

Lihue tied a high temperature record today. The high of 86 degrees tied a record for the date last set in 1958.

Hilo and Kahului set high temperature records for the date on Sunday. The high of 88 degrees at the Hilo airport broke a record of 87 set on the date in 1996. The temperature at Kahului Airport of 93 degrees tied a high temperature record for the date last set in 1950.

Southeasterly winds continued to bring vog and moist tropical air over Oahu and Kauai today and into the evening. But forecasters said relief should be on the way.

The weather system that brought the change in the winds is expected to move away, allowing tradewinds to return by Tuesday and become breezy by Wednesday.

Enjoy the pleasant tradewind weather while it lasts.

Another weather system is bringing an increased chance of rain Wednesday night through the weekend. The showers will mostly fall on windward and mauka areas, but brisk tradewinds may blow some rain to leeward areas.

The forecast for Honolulu and south shores of Oahu calls for mostly clear skies tonight and isolated showers after midnight, with light easterly winds returning and increasing to 10 to 20 mph by Wednesday.

Later in the week, tradewinds could increase to 15 to 25 mph, with higher gusts.
