Strong winds damage roof; Surf advisory extended
Gusty blew the roof off a garage in Hilo and kicked up surf on east shores.
The National Weather Service extended a high surf advisory for east shores of Kauai, Oahu, Molokai, Maui and Hawaii island until 6 p.m. Thursday.
“An east swell combined with strong tradewinds will maintain elevated rough surf along east-facing shores of most Hawaiian islands for the next several days,” the weather service said.
“Expect strong, breaking waves, shore break, and strong longshore and rip currents making swimming difficult and dangerous,” forecasters said.
In Hilo, a strong gust of wind blew the roof off a garage on Laukapu Street Monday afternoon.
Donna Takeya said she was sitting in her home next door when she heard a loud, whistling noise and her front door slammed shut, ahead of a downpour.

When she opened the door, she saw her neighbor’s roof in her yard.
“It was kind of scary,” she said.
The weather service said it was not likely that a tornado formed.
Winds were gusting up to 50 mph on Monday and heavy rain can also create strong downdrafts, forecasters said.
East winds of 15 to 25 mph, with higher gusts, are blowing rain clouds over the islands, creating showers on windward and mauka slopes with some rain being blown over to leeward sides.
Forecasters said more windy, rainy weather is expected through the end of the week.
“Conditions can be expected to become wetter almost everywhere through the next 24 to 36 hours as even moister air, and a dissipating front, arrive from upwind,” the weather service said.
The forecast for the state calls for mostly cloudy and breezy conditions with showers likely in windward and mauka areas and scattered showers in leeward areas. Highs will be between 82 and 87 degrees with lows of 73 to 78 degrees.
