Strong quake off Chile poses no tsunami threat to Hawaii
A strong earthquake off the coast of central Chile today did not generate a widespread tsunami that would threaten Hawaii, officials said.
The quake, with a magnitude of 6.9, was centered about 58 miles northwest of Coquimbo, Chile, at a depth of 6.2 miles, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.
Officials at the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center on Oahu said, “a destructive Pacific-wide tsunami is not expected and there is no tsunami threat to Hawaii.” The quake struck at about 3:54 p.m. Hawaii time.
