Big Isle police ID man killed in hit-and-run crash

A 29-year-old Ocean View man was killed in a hit-and-run accident Tuesday night when the moped he was driving collided with a sedan.

Big Island police said Ling Oniel died at Kona Community Hospital where he was taken following the 7:15 p.m. accident on Kona Drive and Paradise Parkway in Ocean View.

Police said a white Honda Civic was traveling north on Paradise Parkway when it failed to yield the right of way at the intersection with Kona Drive and collided with Oniel, who had been traveling west on Kona Drive on a black moped.

The driver of Honda fled from the scene before police arrived.

Oniel was taken to Kona Community Hospital where he died at 11:30 p.m.

Polive have classified the case as negligent homicide. Anyone who witnessed the crash is asked to call Officer Justin Hooser at 326-4646, Ext. 229. Tipsters who prefer to remain anonymous may call Crime Stoppers at 961-8300.

Because this crash occurred in a private subdivision, the death is not counted toward the official traffic fatality count.

    Possibly another case of a guilty driver being legally drunk or lacking a valid license or insurance.
