No. 6 Rainbow Warriors sweep Grand Canyon

Freshman opposite Stijn van Tilburg put down a team-high 14 points and junior hitter Kupono Fey celebrated his 21st birthday with 13 kills as No. 6 Hawaii swept Grand Canyon 25-20, 25-22, 28-26 in a nonconference men’s volleyball match tonight at the Stan Sheriff Center.

It was the 13th consecutive home win for the Rainbow Warriors (5-1) who handed the ‘Lopes (5-1) their first loss. The teams meet again at 7 p.m. Friday.

Hawaii senior libero Kolby Kanetake finished with 13 digs to move into the top 10 of the program’s career list, passing Aaron Wilton (593). He now has 599 and needs 17 to pass Nejc Zemljak (615) for No. 9.

Van Tilburg had 12 kills and senior hitter Siki Zarkovic added 12 for the Warriors. Zarkovic needs seven kills to become the the 19th Warrior to reach 1,000 career kills.

For Grand Canyon, senior hitter Gerrard Lipscombe finished with 15 kills and sophomore hitter Shaleve Saada 10. Sophomore libero Sky Engleman, a Moanalua graduate, had 11 digs.
