CHICAGO >> A Federal Aviation Agency spokesman says a United Airlines flight from San Francisco rolled all the way to the end of a runway when it landed at Chicago’s O’Hare International Airport.

FAA spokesman Tony Molinaro had no further details about the landing of Flight 734 about 11:55 a.m. Friday. He said the agency is investigating.

There were no reports of injuries.

Passenger Leigh Honeywell told The Associated Press the landing seemed normal until the pilot announced the plane was “off the end of the runway.”

A United Airlines spokeswoman didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment.

The National Weather Service reported light snow falling at O’Hare Friday. The Chicago Aviation Department said more than 155 flights had been canceled, many due to winter weather on the East Coast.

According to the passenger quoting the pilot, the plane “rolled OFF the end of the runway”. That’s very different than rolling TO the end of the runway as the headline suggests happened. It is perfectly legal, and not a problem, for a plane to use the WHOLE length of the runway if the pilot so chooses when cleared to land. No FAA regulation prevents rolling TO the end unless ATC tells the pilot to “land and hold short of…..”, which is a clearance the pilot must acknowledge by either accepting or declining. Rolling OFF the end is definitely frowned upon.

The pilot said to the co-pilot, “Ho brah, this is the shortest run way I’ve eva seen, but look how wide this buggah stay!”
