Man arrested in attempted bank robbery is charged with theft

A 21-year-old man who allegedly tried to rob a bank in the Ala Moana area last month was charged today with theft in connection with the incident, police said.

Jacob Mariano, of Mililani, was charged with misdemeanor theft and his bail was set at $1,000. He remained at the Oahu Community Correctional Center today.

Police said Mariano entered the bank about 10:10 a.m. Dec. 31 and passed a demand note and then fled without any money.

Police opened a second-degree robbery case, but Mariano was charged with third-degree theft, which is defined as intending to deprive another of property by taking or receiving the property. Police did not say what Mariano took.

He was arrested this morning at OCCC, where he is also being held in lieu of $11,000 bail while awaiting trial for an unrelated auto theft case, and has a court date scheduled for Feb. 23.
