Man dies while kite surfing off Kahului

A male tourist died Thursday while kite surfing in waters off “Kite Beach,” just west of Kanaha Beach Park in Kahului.

Kite surfers reported at 3:51 p.m. seeing the man floating face down.

An Ocean Safety officer, aided by a kite surfer, brought the man, described as middle-aged, to shore, a fire official said. Firefighters and paramedics tried to revive the man, but he died at the scene.

Too easy to ‘get in over one’s head’ in unpredictable Hawaiian waters.

Kite surfing may not be a good sport for “middle-aged” people. There is the fantasy/desire and the reality check. Sad …

Have fun, but not too much fun. Be safe.
