Cause of Sand Island warehouse fire eludes investigators
Fire investigators were unable to determine the cause of the fire that destroyed a Sand Island warehouse Saturday, causing $2.2 million in damage.
The undetermined classification of a fire means that the fire investigator analyzed all possible causes of the fire but there is insufficient information to identify any one specific cause, said Capt. David Jenkins, HFD spokesman. In addition, there is insufficient information to substantially eliminate some or all of the other possible causes. The case is now closed, but can be reopened with the introduction or discovery of new information about the fire.
The four-alarm fire was reported at 12:05 a.m. Saturday. The first HFD unit arrived at 12:13 a.m. to find the large commercial warehouse fully involved with black smoke and flames emanating from all sides of the building.
Due to limited access to fire hydrants, three HFD water tankers were utilized to ensure an adequate water supply. The fire was brought under control at 2:25 a.m.
