Strong earthquake shakes eastern Russia; no tsunami threat to Hawaii

A magnitude-6.4 earthquake occurred off the eastern Russia today, but has not created a tsunami threat to Hawaii, the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said.

The temblor was recorded at about 12:50 p.m. Hawaii time, along the east coast of Kamchatka, a Russian peninsula southwest of the Bering Sea.

“A destructive Pacific-wide tsunami threat is not expected and there is no tsunami threat to Hawaii,” the Pacific Warning Center said.

The epicenter of the quake was about 19.5 miles deep and about 60 miles east of the peninsula, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

If we look back in history, the only Tsunami threat ever in the 20th century until now, was the one that hit Hilo. Weather professionals talk about the 100 year storm, so possibly the only big threats will arrive every one hundred years, so expect the next one within the next 25 years, which is a long time, however soon enough considering that all human life near the coastline are important.
