U.S., state flags flown at half-staff to honor Brussels victims

The president and the governor ordered U.S. and state flags flown at half-staff through Saturday out of respect for the victims of the Brussels attack.

Obama said in a proclamation issued hours after Tuesday’s attacks that “the American people stand with the people of Brussels. We will do whatever it takes, working with nations and peoples around the world, to bring the perpetrators of these attacks to justice, and to go after terrorists who threaten our people.”

Gov. David Ige said, “It saddens me that this international surge of terrorism has become the ‘new normal’ that can happen anywhere at any time. Our thoughts and prayers are with those who were injured in the attacks in Brussels and we send our deepest condolences to the victims of this tragedy and their families.”

In another tribute, Mayor Kirk Caldwell ordered that Honolulu Hale be lit up in the colors of the Belgium flag — black, yellow and red — until March 28 .

“The citizens of the City and County of Honolulu stand with the people of Belgium during this difficult time, and send our heartfelt aloha to the families of those who were killed and injured,” Caldwell said in a written statement.
