Strong earthquake strikes off Vanuatu; no tsunami threat to Hawaii
A magnitude 6.9 earthquake struck off the Vanuatu archipelago but was not strong enough to generate a tsunami, according to the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center.
The U.S. Geological Survey reported that the quake struck around 8:58 p.m. Hawaii time about 68 miles west-southwest of Sola at a depth of about 20 miles.
