‘Bows jump to first place in Big West with sweep

Marcus Doi had a career-high four RBIs and Alex Hatch didn’t give up an earned run in seven innings to pick up the win in Hawaii’s 7-2 victory over UC Davis to sweep the series at Dobbins Stadium in Davis, Calif.

Senior Kyle Von Ruden threw a three-hit shutout in a 5-0 victory in the first game of today’s doubleheader to push the Rainbow Warriors into sole possession of first place in the Big West at 5-1.

UH has won 10 of its last 13 to move over .500 at 16-15 overall.

Hatch (3-3), who didn’t record an out in last week’s start against UC Irvine, gave up four hits and two walks with five strikeouts.

Doi capped a four-run third inning with a two-out double to score two runs and added a two-run single in a three-run seventh inning.

Jacob Sheldon-Collins went 3-for-5 with two runs scored and Johnny Weeks singled and scored twice for UH, which had 14 hits.

Von Ruden (5-1) won his fourth straight starter in the opener and tossed his second complete game in three weeks.

His nine-inning shutout was the first by a Hawaii pitcher since Scott Kuzminsky in May 2014.

Eric Ramirez went 2-for-3 with three RBIs and Matt LoCoco singled and scored twice for UH.

Von Ruden retired the final 15 batters of the game. He walked one and struck out three and has now lasted at least seven innings in seven straight starts.

Hawaii has won nine straight road games in conference play.

UC Davis, which was held scoreless for 22 consecutive innings in the series, dropped to 8-18 overall and 1-5 in the BWC.

After all these past several seasons of disappointments, Coach seems to have put together a cast that knows how to win. Hopefully, the team stamina will remain staunch through the reason. The season does look bright for UH Baseball loyalists.
