AUGUSTA, Ga. >> Taking advantage of a devastating collapse by defending champion Jordan Spieth, Englishman Danny Willett won the 80th Masters on Sunday with a final-round 67 to finish at 5 under for the tournament to secure his first major championship.

Spieth had a five-shot lead after shooting 32 on the front nine to go to 7 under for the event, but as they say, the Masters begins on the back nine on Sunday and you won’t get any argument from Spieth, who bogeyed the 10th, bogeyed the 11th and quadruple-bogeyed the 12th to fall back to 1 under for the tournament.

He managed to right the ship long enough with birdies at the par-5 13th and 15th holes to get back to 3 under with three to play, but got no closer to shoot a final-round 73, two shots off the winning pace to finish tied for second with Lee Westwood (69) at 2 under par.

Willett began celebrating with his caddie about the same time Spieth sank his birdie putt at 15. At the par-3 16th, the native Texan knew he needed birdie to have any chance and he put it just beyond the hole about 7 feet for birdie, but missed the tricky downhill putt. Spieth had a 5-footer coming back for par that he made.

Now, down two with two to play, Spieth had to go birdie, birdie on two difficult par 4s just to draw even. He went bogey-par, instead to complete one of the biggest collapses in Masters history.

Willett began the day at even par for the tournament, three shots off Spieth’s third-round lead, and didn’t do too much until he managed birdies at Nos. 6 and 8 to get into contention. Three more birdies at 13, 14 and 16 put the 28-year-old in position to win his fifth professional event. He has four victories on the European Tour and now his first major title and the second Englishman to win the Masters. Nick Faldo, who won three times here, was the first in 1989.
