Coast Guard, fire department rescue kayak fisherman off Waialua

Both the Coast Guard and the Honolulu Fire Department came to the aid of a 52-year-old man who apparently got into trouble while fishing from a kayak early this morning off Waialua.

The fire department was called about 4:34 a.m. by the Coast Guard to assist. Using its helicopter, the Coast Guard located the kayak at 5 a.m. about 400 yards off Aweoweo Beach Park in Waialua.

Both the fire department and the Coast Guard put rescue swimmers into the water just before 5:30 a.m. to help the fisherman bring the kayak to shore.

No injuries were reported.

Again, an article about an incident with insufficient information to be of any use to help prevent a similar thing from happening in the future. The two big questions are: Why did it happen? and… What can we do to keep from having it happen again? Be a safety … help the general public identify risks.

leino, I’ll take a stab at it, a kayak fisherman goes out to sea, by himself, and he underestimated the sea conditions and overestimated his skill. In other words, he had no business being out there by himself.
