Native Books/Na Mea Hawai‘i is selling fresh pounded kalo.

Say you want to avoid carbs, but you are having a wicked craving for gyoza. Locally made Kukui Sausage has the answer: gyoza sausage. It is stuffed with all the pork and gingery goodness we love.

Among all of Kukui’s excellent flavors, it rivals my longtime favorite, pineapple Portuguese, for best ever.

Some of of Kukui’s sausages are available at local grocery stores, but to get the full lineup you have to venture to the Kapiolani Community College farmers market on Saturdays or visit the website at kukuisausageco.com. Prices are $3 for 8-ounce packages and $5 for a pound. Limited flavors are offered in the larger size.

Fennel freebie

Pick up a free fennel seed packet at the Halawa Xeriscape Garden in May as part of its monthly giveaway of seeds that produce xeric plants (those that require little water).

If you’re successful in growing a fennel bulb from your seeds, it can be grilled or served in soups, sandwiches or stews. The plant itself attracts beneficial insects.

Visit between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. Wednesdays and Saturdays. The garden is at 99-1268 Iwaena St. Visit boardofwatersupply.com or call 748-5363.

Harvest and dine on daikon at festival

Daikon means “big root” in Japanese, and the white radishes grown at the Honbushin International Center in Mililani live up to the name.

These are substantial tubers, worthy of a celebration, thus the center’s annual Daikon Festival, taking place from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday.

Harvest your own, or taste it in a dish or two. Food and craft booths and a vegetable bazaar are part of the celebration. Admission is free.

The center is at 95-030 Waihonu St. Visit honbushin.us. Call 623-7693.
