Kalyp Allen Rapoza was killed in an officer-involved shooting on Monday in Hilo.

Hawaii County police today identified the man who was killed in an officer-involved shooting Monday at a home off West Kawailani Street in Hilo. as 25-year-old Kalyp Allen Rapoza, of Hilo.

An autopsy will be held Wednesday to determine the cause of death.

Also, a necropsy has been ordered to determine the cause of death of a pit bull killed in the same incident.

The officer, who shot Rapoza and the dog, has been with the Hawaii Police Department for three years. He has been placed on administrative leave.

As is standard practice in any officer-involved shooting, both a criminal investigation and an administrative investigation by the Office of Professional Standards will be held.

Police said they got a call at about 4:20 p.m. Monday for a disturbance at a West Kawailani Street home.

A responding officer found a man wielding a knife. Police said a pit bull that had chased paramedics into their vehicle was also present.

The officer fired several shots, killing the man and the pit bull, police said in a news release.

So the paramedics were already on scene when the cops arrived (had been chased back into the rig by the dog). It’ll be interesting to find out why they were called — since that’s probably related to what transpired.
