The voyaging canoe Hokule‘a received a most unconventional New England welcome Saturday as it arrived at Fan Pier in Boston.

Crew members were greeted by area residents including representatives of the Massachusett Tribe and feted with performances by a Boston hula halau, Samoan Dancers and Native American dancers and drummers.

The crew is scheduled to hold public canoe tours, meet with Native American communities, schools and maritime groups. The itinerary also includes a Talk Story event hosted by the Harvard School of Design.

Prior to arriving in Boston, the crew had spent three days in New Bedford, Mass.

The canoe will depart Boston for Salem, Mass., on Thursday.

Since departing Hawaiian waters in May 2014, Hokule’a has sailed more than 26,000 nautical miles and made stops in 14 countries and 70 ports. Overall, the Mālama Honua Worldwide Voyage is expected to cover over 60,000 nautical miles, 100 ports, and 27 nations, including 12 of UNESCO’s Marine World Heritage sites.
