Kilauea lava flow slows advance toward coastline
HILO >> The flow of lava from Kilauea is less than a mile from the coastline and slowing its pace.
The Hawaii Tribune-Herald reports breakouts appeared to have diverted the lava flow’s supply.
Hawaiian Volcano Observatory spokeswoman Janet Babb says there is still a lot of activity in steeper areas.
Lava can be seen from Hawaii Volcanoes National Park and Kalapana.
People looking for a better view can hike a 3-mile gravel route to the park boundary but are advised not to leave the road for safety and to avoid private property.
The flow from the Puu Oo vent began May 24.
