Donald Trump reeled on Sunday amid a sustained campaign of criticism by the parents of a Muslim American soldier killed by a suicide bomber in Iraq and a rising outcry within his own party over his rough and racially charged dismissal of the couple.

The confrontation between the parents, Khizr and Ghazala Khan, and Trump has emerged as an unexpected and potentially pivotal flash point in the general election. Trump has plainly struggled to respond to the reproach of a military family who lost a son, and he has repeatedly answered the Khan family’s criticism with harsh and defensive rhetoric.

Trump earned no reprieve with his complaints that Khizr Khan had been unfair to him; on Sunday morning, he claimed on Twitter that Khizr Khan had “viciously attacked” him. Trump and his advisers tried repeatedly to change the subject to Islamic terrorism, to no avail.

Instead, Trump appeared to be caught on Sunday in perhaps the biggest crisis of his campaign, rivaling the uproar in June after he attacked a federal judge, Gonzalo P. Curiel, over his “Mexican heritage.”

Democratic leaders and candidates for Congress began over the weekend to call on Republicans to disavow Trump.

Hillary Clinton, the Democratic presidential nominee, sternly reprimanded Trump Sunday.

“Mr. Khan paid the ultimate sacrifice in his family, didn’t he?” Clinton said. “And what has he heard from Donald Trump? Nothing but insults, degrading comments about Muslims, a total misunderstanding of what made our country great.”

Khizr Khan, who addressed the Democratic National Convention Thursday, said on “Meet the Press” on NBC that Trump had shown disrespect to his wife, and he accused Trump of running a campaign “of hatred, of derision, of dividing us.”

And Ghazala Khan, in an opinion article published in The Washington Post, rebuked Trump for suggesting that she had not been permitted to speak at the Democratic convention. Ghazala Khan said she did not speak because she did not believe she could remain composed while talking about her son.

Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., said Sunday that Trump had crossed another inviolable line. “This is going to a place where we’ve never gone before, to push back against the families of the fallen,” he said.

  1. Pocho says:

Mom and Dad did not sacrifice anything. Their son did!

    • Pocho says:

How in the World could those parents say they “sacrificed” their son for the United States of America. It’s a voluntary military from what I understand but I’m not saying their son wasn’t a hero servicing our Country for Freedom. This is all Politics!

      • FarmerDave says:

        Donald? Is that you?

      • keaukaha says:

It doesn’t matter what you say, it’s what the idiot says. He doesn’t know how to shut up.

        • keaukaha says:

You should moderate what the Chump says. I am not the republican nominee for the POTUS.

        • thos says:

One will plow through all 366 word of this “journalism” without even ONE SINGLE QUOTE from Donald Trump himself on this subject.

That is not spin. That sloppy mixing of ‘news’ and editorial opinion is a contrived piece of propaganda that the editors faithfully believe will be swallowed hook, line and sinker by the electorate they privately believe is terminally stupid.

These once all powerful shapers of “news” have forgotten one thing: their “stupid” customers now have the opportunity to converse among themselves in real time thanks to the internet Al Bore claimed he created.

        • Pocho says:

          I agree, lol.

      • krusha says:

Parents raise their kids from the time they are born, and have a big say on decisions. If they were dead set against that guy serving their country, then he wouldn’t have been in Iraq in the first place. When their kids die, then they grieve more than anybody else. By the way, Trump had numerous deferments from entering the Vietnam was during it’s height in the end of the 60’s, so that’s one decision there that Trump made instead of defending his country so he has no business criticizing any family who has made sacrifices like this. None of his kids served the military either.

    • TigerEye says:

That’s right, it’s not like the parents spent a career doing something saintly like amassing a fortune, the only thing they did was lose a son. And, it’s not like they don’t have other sons, right? And, why does the father even care? It wasn’t his life that was lost after all.

Yeesh, the nerve of some people.

      • aiea7 says:

please note that their son did not suddenly appear out of no where. their parents conceived him, hence, it is their grief too that their son had died for his country. you seem to feel that parents should not love their children. are you trumpy in disguise? what a terrible thing to say, you and pocho. no empathy, just viciousness. you are nothing.

      • klastri says:

Trump, obviously, is a sociopath. More troubling is that his followers seem to be also.

It’s a sad day when anyone defends what Trump did on this. It’s indefensible.

You admit you have been talking out of your [vulgar term redacted] and have no factual basis on which to rest your hate speech.

Well, no surprise there. About what one has come to expect from the likes of you.

        • klastri says:

thos – Like usual, you’re lying. I “admit” no such thing. I just said that you can’t order me, or anyone else on here, to do anything. You write orders here obsessively. Have you wondered why no one does what you order?

        • sarge22 says:

In “Partners in Crime,” two-time No. 1 New York Times bestselling author Jerome Corsi presents the detailed research and expert testimony proving beyond a shadow of a doubt that the Clinton Foundation is “a vast, criminal conspiracy,” also described in these pages as “a slush fund for grifters.”

Corsi exposes how the Clintons amassed hundreds of millions of dollars in personal net worth, while building a $2 billion empire in the Clinton Foundation. The victims are countless thousands of honest people who contributed their hard-earned money to what they thought were philanthropic causes. The sordid tale involves suspicion of Enron-like fraudulent accounting practices by none less than PricewaterhouseCoopers, a “Big Four” firm, as well as the several “shell corporations” and “pass-through” bank accounts Bill Clinton has established in secret to hide what amount to kickbacks from Clinton Foundation donors and sponsors.

In “Partners in Crime,” Corsi provides readers the names and addresses of state attorney generals throughout the country, explaining that any one state in the Union can get a temporary restraining order from a state judge to place the Clinton Foundation in receivership and launch law enforcement examinations of Clinton Family philanthropic fraud accomplished on a global scale.

It is not enough, Corsi concludes, to appeal to Hillary Clinton to withdraw from the 2016 presidential race in disgrace. A national campaign to “Shut Down the Clinton Foundation” must be launched, Corsi insists, to prevent Barack Obama and other heads of state worldwide from following the Clinton Family crime formula to create their own “charitable foundations” to enrich themselves upon leaving office.

Thus, it is of no surprise you are in such a state of swoon over Mr. Trump, as his largest supporting demographic are white males, who are under-educated, and have a difficult time holding down a permanent job. It sort of makes a whole lot of sense…..

This reminds me of A Few Good Men. Hillary & her campaign know how easy it is to get Trump to put his own foot in his mouth. Every week they can bring out a new person to make a speech against him: a Hispanic, a LGBT, an Asian, a veteran, a schoolteacher, an athlete, etc. Soon, Donald will alienate them all.

At the next debate, Hillary can jab at him until he predictably says, “You can’t handle the truth about my taxes! You’re d— right I’m broke!”

He didn’t make those billions, those people who worked for him did. And don’t forget, he himself said that he pays the minimum taxes as possible. This guys is greedy and corrupt.

With this statement, does it mean I support Clinton… No! I might vote for her, I might not… I really wish Paul Ryan is running for president… But out of all candidates, not in a million years I will vote for Trump… I’d prefer President Bush’s 3rd time to happen before Presideng Trump to happen.

@les, the bodies were not “mutilated” and “dragged thru the streets of Benghazi.” That is a lie. Am. Stevens, for ex., was found still alive in the compound, then taken by private car (they couldn’t find an ambulance) to Benghazi Medical Center. The others weren’t dragged thru the streets either. I wonder if you were just as angry w/Pres Reagan over the 300+ deaths that resulted from the Oct 23 1983 bombings in Beirut. I mentioned that to a Republican who at least had the decency to admit he was a hypocrite about the issue. But judging from the way you write, I’d guess you weren’t even born then.

      • Ikefromeli says:

Indeed, but here is the problem, he has no discipline, no ability to moderate, no sense of decorum, and when you couple that with a laziness to actually do the book work and study the issues, what you are left with is a cowardly blowhard pendatic pig of a man.

      • d_bullfighter says:

Trump could have opted to say nothing. On the other hand, that would have left a gross mischaracterization of his position on Muslim immigration. Trump has never proposed a ban on ALL Muslims. Under Trump’s proposal, Khan and his family for example would have perhaps experienced a delay in getting into this country while security checks were performed. Unlike the current system, security protocols are lacking thus allowing nefarious types to sneak in. Anything wrong with trying to screen immigrants to prevent terrorists from getting into this country? Isn’t that the foremost duty of the government to protect the safety and well being of its own citizens? Furthermore, Trump could have gone a step further by asking Mr. Khan how a devout Muslim can be devoted to sharia law and loyal to the US Constitution as they are diametrically opposed to one another. One can pledge allegiance to one but not the other.

“The repubs had a similar situation where the mother of a slain person in Benghazi. You sure make aiea look bad.

“…Mr.Khan’s speech was a Democrat Party sanctioned attack on Trump… What else was he supposed to do?”

Trump might have responded, even disagreed, with class. But he didn’t. Can you comprehend that?

    • thos says:

Mr. Khan and his wife made the DECISION to politicize ~~ some might say “trivialize” ~~ the death of their son before a national television audience to achieve a means spirited political effect.

Now that they have voluntarily crawled into the arena, they cannot expect much sympathy because they now find it an unpleasant surprise to encounter (in the person they CHOSE to attack) a counter-puncher who relishes the sting of battle.

  4. inverse says:

Trump is too stoopid and arrogant to just let this go because to attack the Muslim American father of a slain US Muslim soldier who was awarded the bronze star saving other American soldiers, many non-Muslim, was a no win scenario for Trump and the Repubs. The argument that Hillary disrepected and lied to the family of the slain Americans in Benghazi is no longer relevant because Trump is doing EXACTLY what the Repubs accused Hillary for doing regarding Benghazi. It was a total trap that the Dems laid out for Trump and he fell for it hook, line and sinker.

  5. oahuresident says:

I believe it is a mistake by both sides. Clinton aligning herself with “muslims” will backfire on her. Trump looks bad in attacking the muslim couple that lost a son, but many non-muslim families have lost sons due to the actions of muslims.

    • lespark says:

Muslims aren’t too popular. Some of their religion are creating problems globally and are suspect of them. And now Crooked Hillary wants to bring in more Isis. There’s a lot of people who don’t think that’s the right thing to do right now.

        • sarge22 says:

Now, let’s be honest Mr. Khan, those of us with knowledge could just as easily bring attention to SGT Hasan Karim Akbar and Major Nidal Hasan, both Muslims serving in the U.S. Army. Just as you celebrated your Muslim son’s sacrifice, there are others who could give testimony to their loss due to those Muslim soldiers — and I use lower case reference to them (soldiers) because they dishonored the oath and were traitors to our Code of Honor. Your son was not, but that had nothing to do with him being a Muslim: he was an American Soldier

        • lespark says:

Your honey keep it up Putin going give her one love tap.

According to a new estimate in 2016, there are 3.3 million Muslims living in the United States, about 1% of the total U.S. population. American Muslims come from various backgrounds and, according to a 2009 Gallup poll, are one of the most racially diverse religious groups in the United States.

Pocho, Lespark, and Ronin sound just like sicko Donald T Rump and evidently have the same chicken hawk perspective of shirking the honor and courage of serving America in our military just like everyone else in their families. It would be amusing to see them all wake up in Aleppo tomorrow morning and get their perspectives from there.

  7. Ikefromeli says:

ation and controversial comments about a fallen soldier’s parents, Donald Trump’s weekend was not going well even before he seemed to endorse the Russian annexation of Crimea, in opposition to U.S. policy and international law.
This was a weekend Trump may hope to forget, and one Democrats will work hard to make sure voters remember. It seemed to demonstrate all of the flaws — trouble with the truth, an inability to let criticism go unanswered and a lack of knowledge of world affairs — this will be the billionaire’s undoing come November.

There was Trump’s claim that the NFL sent him a letter complaining about the debate schedule. The NFL says no such letter exists.

And there were attacks on the family of the late Capt. Humayun Khan, insinuations that his mother was forbidden from speaking while onstage at the Democratic National Convention and a claim that his father had “no right” to disparage Trump.

All of that came before the airing of an interview Sunday in which Trump appeared to endorse the Russian annexation of Crimea, saying on ABC’s “This Week” that “the people of Crimea, from what I’ve heard, would rather be with Russia than where they were.” He also stated that Russian President Vladimir Putin is “not going into Ukraine” before admitting “well, he’s there in a certain way.”

The series of events only complicates life further for those Republicans who have tied themselves to Trump. His running mate, Indiana Gov. Mike Pence, who has a son in the Marines, will inevitably be asked about the Khan controversy. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell and House Speaker Paul Ryan both released statements on the controversy praising Khan and distancing themselves from Trump — without actually naming Trump.

Clinton Foundation works as a tax free international money laundering scheme.
It may eventually prove to be the largest political criminal enterprise in U.S. History.

This is a textbook case on
how you hide foreign money sent to you and repackage it to be used for your
          own purposes. All tax free.

          Here’s how it works:

          1.
You create a separate foreign “charity.” In this case, the Clintons set it up
          in Canada.

          2. Foreign oligarchs and governments, then
donate to this Canadian charity. In this case, over 1,000
did – contributing mega millions. I’m sure they did this out of the goodness
of their hearts, and expected nothing in return. (Imagine Putin’s
buddies waking up one morning and just deciding to send untold millions to a
          Canadian charity).

          3. The Canadian charity then bundles these
separate donations and makes a massive donation to the Clinton
          Foundation.

          4. The Clinton Foundation and the cooperating
Canadian charity claim Canadian law prohibits the identification of individual
          donors.

          5. The Clinton Foundation then “spends” some of this
money for legitimate good works programs. Unfortunately, experts believe
this is on the order of 10%. Much of the balance goes to enrich the
Clintons, pay salaries to untold numbers of hangers on, and fund lavish
travel, etc. Again, virtually tax free, which means you and I are subsidizing it.

          6. The Clinton Foundation, with access to the world’s best
accountants, somehow fails to report much of this on their tax filings. They
discover these “clerical errors” and begin the process of re-filing 5 years of
          tax returns.

          7. Net result – foreign money goes into the Clinton’s pockets tax free and
untraceable back to the original donor. This is the textbook definition of
money laundering. Oh, by the way, the Canadian “charity” includes as a
principal one Frank Giustra. Google him. He is the
guy who was central to the formation of Uranium One, the Canadian company that
somehow acquired massive U.S. Uranium interests and then sold them to an
organization controlled by Russia. This transaction required U.S. State
Department approval, and guess who was Secretary of State when the approval
          was granted.

As an aside, imagine how former Virginia Governor
Bob McDonnell feels. That poor schlep is in jail because he and his wife took
$165,000 in gifts and loans for doing minor favors for a guy promoting a
vitamin company. Not legal but not exactly putting U.S. Security at risk.

Sarcasm aside, if you’re still not persuaded
this was a cleverly structured way to get unidentified foreign money to the
Clintons, ask yourself this: Why did these foreign
interests funnel money through a Canadian charity? Why not
donate directly to the Clinton Foundation? Better yet, why
not donate money directly to the people, organizations and countries in need?

This is the essence of money laundering and influence
peddling. Now you know why Hillary’s destruction of 30,000
e-mails was a risk she was willing to take. Bill and
Hillary are devious, unprincipled, dishonest and criminal and they are Slick!

Warning: They could be back in the White House in January 2017.

          Don’t let it happen.

Remember, most people are not well informed. We must inform and educate them.

Your not doing Trump any favors…..youre not the brightest of bulbs, if you know what I mean. Further, that’s exceeded by your dearth of articulation. It’s not a great combo…..

        • lespark says:

We just got to wait and see don’t we. It will be sweet for someone. Somebody’s going to win.

        • lespark says:

Oh and by the way don’t be late for your dishwashing job. Crooked Hillary is spending $50,000,000 to Trumps $10. She needs money, not pointless comments. You got to wonder what she’s afraid of if what you say is true. And don’t be cheap. The Russian money dried up.

        • sarge22 says:

Good job Les. You’re keeping the kids off the streets. Apparently the SA doesn’t like to see anything from Allen West a true American Hero. Hard time getting anything posted. Would like to see SA emails. lol

    • lespark says:

Ikefromeli, thanks for pointing Ryan and Mc Connell out. The first 100 days they got to go no matter who wins.

      • Ikefromeli says:

Presidents do no fire or release elected officials. They are on 2 or 6 year terms, per the voting of their congressional district. Gosh, you might be one of the dullest folks I have ever encountered. Time for your mom to make you tomato soup.

Khan is the one who started playing politics with his son’s murder. I was surprised.

    • lespark says:

Les,,when is the last time you were employed?

        • lespark says:

Crooked Hillary knows what she did. Bill knows what she did. They are puppets on a string. She flips and then flops. She’s like Little Egypt, one thin dime and she’ll do the hoochiecoochie.
I’m a security guard, law enforcement kind of. Trying to get my GED. Hard time in English.
I’ll never be as good as you. Thanks for at least paying attention to a high school drop out.

    • lespark says:

If not for the Hawaiians this guy would still be back in Pakistan chasing ambulances like Klastri.

      • klastri says:

        You’re lying again. As always.

But I’m flattered that you think about me so often and write about me too.

I never think about you. Not ever.

Every time you write something, you further expose your ignorance of the law and what lawyers do.

        • sarge22 says:

Spoken like a failed lawyer who can’t take the heat. Now get back in the bird cage as Ike has some bird seed for you. I know I’m lying and you are flattered. May the law be with you.

        • klastri says:

sarge22 – Bird seed …. yes, of course. That makes a lot of sense.

Are you and lespark actually the same person?

Or are you just his ventriloquist’s doll?

  9. Mr Mililani says:

It looks like “The Donald” is just about washed up. It’s doubtful that he can undo all this damage. He’ll probably take a lot of the Republican party down with him. Many of us in Mililani hope that he takes Fukumoto-Chang with him and we get our Marilyn Lee back in office. Marilyn Lee has done a lot for our community and Fukie has done almost nothing.

    • thos says:

As the famed (if fictional) NYC olive oil importer, Vito (aka “Don”) Corleone (nee Andolini) confided to his sons, “A man can have no greater advantage over another man than to be underestimated”.

The Donald has made mincemeat of the projections of arrogant know it alls. Indeed their contempt coupled with their ignorance have been illuminating his path to the White House next January.

So by all means DO continue to shower him with your hate speech. He LOVES it.

  10. lespark says:

There was nothing unexpected about this.

  11. deepdiver311 says:

this muslim should direct his anger to hillary clinton who voted for the war a war that trump disapproved of.

Substitute Trump for Humpty Dumpty and he fits this song perfectly. It’s his turn to get fired.

  13. hunakai says:

Here’s Trump’s problem: he didn’t have to respond to this sensitive subject that he could not possibly win, regardless of who was right. But in typically arrogant and shortsighted fashion, he just could not restrain himself. The Republican Party must cringe every time he opens his mouth.

    • lespark says:

Remember Sean Smith’s mother? Benghazi? I guess this was payback. The mistake The Republicans made was they should have saved it for Thursday. Live and learn.

    • Hitaxpayer says:

I agree it was stupid. Just wondering if the Obama administration forced the military to give him this medal. It wouldn’t surprise me because Obama will do anything thing to make the us hating, murdering, terrorist religion of peace look better

    • thos says:

What EXACTLY did The Donald say that you find objectionable?

Cite the EXACT quote, the time, the place and the source.

  14. Ikefromeli says:

And in continued good news for the campaign, Billionaire industrialist and conservative benefactor Charles Koch’s expansive political network will not help Donald Trump win the presidency.

That’s the message from one of the Koch network’s chief lieutenants as hundreds of the nation’s most powerful Republican donors gathered for a weekend retreat on Saturday. With Election Day just three months away, Koch lamented the state of the 2016 contest during a welcome reception inside a luxury hotel at the foot of the Rocky Mountains.

“We don’t really, in some cases, don’t really have good options,” Koch said of the “current political situation.” And told Donald to kick rocks ….

RACIST BAST++D … A GUY GIVES HIS LIFE FOR OUR COUNTRY AND THAT’S NOT GOOD ENOUGH BECAUSE OF HIS RELIGION … CAN’T WAIT TO SEE THE NUDE PIX OF HIS WIFE COMING OUT … REAL CLASS WH**E AS THE FIRST LADY OR FIRST B*T*H

  17. BadBingo says:

I think this might be the “Have you no decency, sir” moment when Trump has finally gone too far and his quest is over. To denigrate a gold star family is beyond disgusting. He had his chance to sacrifice by serving in Vietnam but chose not to instead joking later on how avoiding STDs from his numerous sexual encounters was his Vietnam. There is nothing inside this “man” but hate.

  18. whs1966 says:

Trump is a low-class bully. If he had attacked white christian parents the way he attacked the Khans, millions of people would be upset, but Trump’s fan base obviously believes it’s permissible to attack non-christian parents.

  19. Publicbraddah says:

Trump bothers me on so many fronts but what bothers me most is that he’s come this far and has so many supporters despite 1) not having a detailed plan for how he plans to fix our nation’s problems, 2) being a racist (there’s no where to hide from his many comments), 3) his failed businesses (bankrupt 4 times), 4) his lack of global experience, and 5) his ability to shoot his mouth off before engaging is brain. This country may be fed up with Washington insiders which Trump is not but you have to be extremely careful of what you’re wishing for.

    • hawaiikone says:

Your concerns are easily explained. First, most Americans are deeply frustrated with the decade old political gridlock, and are turning their backs on entrenched participants. Next, along comes someone financially able to insert himself into the mix and call out the rampant hypocrisy repeatedly revealed by successful candidates from either side of a fence that we’ve built by too much use of our mouths instead of our ears. Jump ahead a couple of months, and without a cognizant plan, we’re going to repeat the process again. What’s critical to take from all this is the reality that neither Trump nor Clinton offers us any relief from this rat race, and electing either will only intensify the divisiveness. If we’re willing to take the challenge, we can interrupt this gradual implosion by supporting someone representative of the best values once held by both major parties. Someone above reproach, with a proven record and unquestioned integrity. Gary Johnson offers this nation a moderator able to bring everyone to the table and listen with an unbiased ear. We have an opportunity to send a very similar message to Washington that sending a Trump would accomplish, only with the added benefit of feeling good about it..
