Rainbow Wahine Annie Mitchem goes up high against the Cal State Long Beach 49ers Nele Barber and Missy Owens during a match Saturday night at the Walter Pyramid.

Hawaii senior opposite Nikki Taylor put down 28 kills, but it was not enough as Long Beach State turned back the 12th-ranked Rainbow Wahine in a Big West volleyball match tonight, 25-17, 23-25, 25-16, 21-25, 15-13, in Long Beach, Calif.

The victory gave the 49ers (12-7, 6-0) the sole lead in the conference as they snapped Hawaii’s Big West winning streak at 26. It also was the first conference road loss for the Rainbow Wahine (12-5, 5-1) in 15 matches dating back to a five-set loss to the host 49ers in 2014.

Taylor finished with 19 digs for her fifth double-double of the season. She passed Jessica Sudduth for 14th on the UH career list at 1,230.

Hawaii had leads of 8-6, 11-9 and 12-11 in Set 5 but couldn’t close, losing in five for the second time this season. The Wahine also lost 3-2 to Washington at home on Sept. 11.

Senior middle Annie Mitchem and sophomore hitter McKenna Granato each had 10 kills, with Granato adding 17 digs for a double-double. Junior libero Savanah Kahakai had 14 digs.

Long Beach State was led by senior hitter Nele Barber (20 kills) and sophomore hitter Anete Brinke (12 kills, 23 digs). Freshman libero Hailey Harward had a career-high 27 digs.

Hawaii had a season-high 15.5 blocks. Long Beach State won the dig war 95-88.

LBS was the better team tonight. Like to see them in the NCAA tournament. Tough defense. Young scrappy team.
Like their Libero take her over Kahakai.
At one point it looked like Taylor was massaging her left arm.
Hope for a different out come on the rematch at the SSC.

The high ball setting is still not working and the passing is still suspect. Since nothing will change I’ve pretty much written off this season. Hopefully, the next coach will implement a faster offense and find a better passer.

Hopefully, the next coach pulls Kahakai’s scholarship cause she is just a decent DS at best. Also, relegate Granato to the bench cause she is nowhere near a D1 starter, to many weaknesses, in my opinion.

Another disappointing loss…Just my opinion, but the Big West is a weak conference that UH should be dominating…

Just shows you how far the Wahine have fallen from being one of the Elite teams in Women’s Volleyball. Can the Wahine get back to being one of the Elite teams, only if the players show they want to be, by how they play on the floor, literally.

I wasn’t able to tune in to the game. First game I missed this season. What happened in the 1st and 3rd sets? Looks like LBS just blew us away. Harward had almost twice as many digs as Kahakai. What happened? Granato had 17 digs and Taylor had 19. The 95-88 difference in digs favors the 49ers, but not by much. Annie had 10 kills but no mention of Mags. Did the 49ers shut down our middle attack or was the passing so bad that Iosia couldn’t set the middles very often? Sorry for all these questions. I guess I’m in shock.

Sorry you missed it they had some really good rallies. Mags had an off night didn’t set the middles much. She had around 4 kills and Burns 2 just guessing.
I think the left side is still weak without Greeley and i don’t think she will be fully recovered this season.I’m hoping that either Cal Poly or UCSB will win over LBS.(slim chance)
Wahine will drop 1 or 2 spots on Monday for sure.

Cindy Luis, still waiting for you to ask Dave Shoji, if he still feels by not being at Fall practice and attending the Olympics has negatively effected how the team has performed so far. If he does not believe so, then wondering why none of the B1G and PAC12 Head Coaches just let their assistants run Fall practice, and not show up until the volleyball season starts. Are you afraid to ask Dave the tough questions, or are you just a mediocre reporter.

I’m not sure what’s up with this coaching staff… passing and defense has gone down hill the last few years… fix these things with players that can do the job consistently… a few years ago wisconsin made it to the finals with a 5’7” outside, good defense/passing, and strong middles… I hope this year doesn’t end of like hartong’s senior year where they were national contenders but in the end just relied on hartong and poor passing doomed them in…

Wasn’t a good match on Hawaii’s part. LBS scored on a lot of “dinks.” Nobody covering. Big pukas. LBS picked up a lot of slams by Na Wahine. LBS hit a lot of shots between our blockers. Time to get ready for next matches.
