Police in downtown Portland, Ore., attempt to disperse people protesting the election of President-elect, Donald Trump, Friday, Nov. 11, 2016. In Portland, police used tear gas and flash-bang grenades Friday to try to disperse the crowd after hundreds of people marched through the city, disrupting traffic and spray-painting graffiti. Authorities said “burning projectiles” were thrown at police and vandalism and assault had taken place during the rally, which organizers had billed as peaceful earlier in the day.

PORTLAND, Ore. >> As protests of President-elect Donald Trump entered another day, police in Portland, Oregon, say one person was shot by a man who had gotten into a confrontation with a protester.

Portland police said the person who was shot was taken to a hospital for treatment of injuries that were not life-threatening. Police said they were looking for the shooter, who apparently fled in his vehicle after the attack early Saturday morning on a Willamette River bridge.

The shooting followed rowdy Friday night protests, when police used tear gas in response to “burning projectiles” thrown at officers, police said on Twitter. Hundreds of people marched through the city, disrupting traffic and spray-painting graffiti.

Authorities reported instances of vandalism and assault during a rally that organizers had billed as peaceful earlier in the day.

In other parts of the country, spirited demonstrations on college campuses and peaceful marches along downtown streets have taken place since Wednesday.

Hundreds joined a Friday afternoon “love rally” in Washington Square Park in Manhattan.

Leslie Holmes, 65, a website developer from Wilton, Connecticut, took an hour-long train ride to the demonstration — her first protest since the 1970s, when she hit the streets of San Francisco to oppose the Vietnam War.

She described herself as an armchair liberal but declared, “I’m not going to be armchair anymore.”

“I don’t want to live in a country where my friends aren’t included, and my friends are fearful, and my children are going to grow up in a world that’s frightening, and my granddaughters can look forward to being excluded from jobs and politics and fulfilling their potential, so I’m here for them,” she said.

Evening marches disrupted traffic in Miami and Atlanta.

Trump supporter Nicolas Quirico was traveling from South Beach to Miami. His car was among hundreds stopped when protesters blocked Interstate 395.

“Trump will be our president. There is no way around that, and the sooner people grasp that, the better off we will be,” he said. “There is a difference between a peaceful protest and standing in a major highway backing up traffic for 5 miles. This is wrong.”

More than a thousand protesters took to the streets across California after night fell including downtown Los Angeles, where over 200 were arrested a night earlier. In Bakersfield, where Trump is far more popular than in most of the state, some held signs reading “Anti-Trump, Pro-USA.”

Small protests also were held in Detroit; Minneapolis; Kansas City, Missouri; Olympia, Washington and Iowa City.

More than 200 people, carrying signs gathered on the steps of the Washington state Capitol. The group chanted “not my president” and “no Trump, no KKK, no fascist USA.”

In Tennessee, Vanderbilt University students sang civil rights songs and marched through campus across a Nashville street, temporarily blocking traffic. A protest also occurred in Minneapolis.

In Chicago, multiple groups planned protests through Saturday.

Nadia Gavino, 25, learned about the rallies on Twitter and protested Thursday evening. Gavino, whose father is from Peru and whose mother is of Mexican and Lithuanian heritage, said she took Trump’s harshest statements about immigrants and Latinos personally.

“I obviously agree that he’s racist, he’s sexist, he’s phobic, he’s misogynistic. He’s all these things you don’t want in a leader,” she said.

Ashley Lynne Nagel, 27, said she joined a Thursday night demonstration in Denver.

“I have a leader I fear for the first time in my life,” said Nagel, a Bernie Sanders supporter who voted for Hillary Clinton.

“It’s not that we’re sore losers,” she said. “It’s that we are genuinely upset, angry, terrified that a platform based off of racism, xenophobia and homophobia has become so powerful and now has complete control of our representation.”

Demonstrations also took place internationally. About 300 people protested Trump’s election as the next American president outside the U.S. Embassy near the landmark Brandenburg Gate in Berlin.

President Barack Obama meets in Berlin next week with Chancellor Angela Merkel and several other European leaders, and is expected to confront global concerns about Trump’s election.

Demonstrations also were planned Saturday in Las Vegas, Los Angeles and other areas.

Previous demonstrations drew thousands of people in New York and other large urban centers. The largely peaceful demonstrations were overshadowed by sporadic episodes of vandalism, violence and street-blocking.

  1. marcus says:

Badly behaving children! Your children are not going to grow up in an intolerant world because of Trump, they will be intolerant because of what they see you doing.

    • copperwire9 says:

They are citizens freely exercising their 1st amendment rights, due to deep love of, and fear for, our nation.

      • Windward_Side says:

Destruction of property and assault are part of the first amendment!?!?! I must have missed something. Let me read it again. /*sarcasm*/

      • kailuaboys says:

        With violence, vandalism?

        • bumbai says:

You don’t express your support for the Constitution by attempting to take it away from others.

        • tigerwarrior says:

I sure hope they find the shooter–not just because what he did was criminal–but to find out whether or not he was an extreme right-wing Republican and staunch NRA supporter.

      • livinginhawaii says:

Wow your approving of the “badly behaving children” that shot someone. That is unacceptable and shows that you have no Aloha. I am really concerned for you – I hope there is a family member that recognizes your pain and can provide help.

      • dontbelieveinmyths says:

Blocking highways is freedom of speech? What if your family member was in an ambulance trying to get to the hospital? Would you still feel the same?

        • Txpyer says:

That’s right. I’m sure thousands who voted for Clinton are impacted by these blocked highways and probably some are owners of businesses that are being vandalized and looted as well. I wonder if some business owners are going to take the extreme and fight back like those Korean merchants during the LA riots.

      • meat says:

You must be a sixties hippie.

        • livinginhawaii says:

Actually she is a mainland transplant around that age who lives on the windward side. She is bitter and often has no Aloha. She has enough knowledge of our culture to be dangerous yet still somewhat ignorant.

      • Pocho says:

All TheDonald has to do is get on the Airwaves like a politicians does and promise these young kids that he’ll support free college tuition to all! And if spoken like a True politician he doesn’t have to keep his word. lol

        • Waterman2 says:

The difference is that he does keep his word. I know that is a novel idea for the Democratic Party , but look what their lies and stealing did to them , they have no party any more. No leader , no power in the fed Gov. I find it hilarious.

      • cojef says:

Exercising their rights to vandalize and torch, out of love and fear for our nation? Where is there peaceable assembly or my right to access the freeways or roadways? Only mayhem and disregard of the opposing views have been demonstrated. The election results are final! Accept and bear defeat with dignity! For the past 8 years accepted my frustration peaceably.

        • NanakuliBoss says:

The young protesters first emerged on the scene during the Vietnam War. Of course they were rejected. Thousands arrested, Kent State shooting,on and on. They were questioning the “young” men dying there. The only ones getting deferred front Nam, we’re the RICH kids. One rich boy got deferred 3 times. That’s when he started “besting” the US system of government. Congratulations.

        • kx4808 says:

And…most of the protests are in the states that was won by Hillary not Donald

        • DeltaDag says:

Hard to believe, but there’s every chance some of these hooligans can claim ancestors that fought at Lexington, charged the stone wall at Fredericksburg, and assaulted Hitler’s Fortress Europe at Normandy. What happened? Why is it that Cornell University feels a need to host a “cry in” for distraught Clinton supporters? What became of American toughness and resilience that was once taken for granted?

      • cabot17 says:

Trump will be impeached by the Republican Congress because they would rather have Mike Pence in the Oval Office. Pence is a true conservative Republican, Trump is not. Look for Trump to be removed from office because of some illegal conflict of interest with his business that threatens national security, probably in Russia . Mike Pence will take over as the 46th President of the United States. Conservative Republicans will have total control of the federal government.

        • dragoninwater says:

And you heard this rumor where? I think the tin foil hat on your head is now cutting off your circulation. You may quickly want to remove it before you go into coma.

        • tigerwarrior says:

I actually contemplated a similar hypothetical scenario involving the possibility of Trump being impeached. A major difference in my theory is that Trump will not back down in his promise to renegotiate the NAFTA and TPP trade agreements in favor of the U.S. Too many opposing forces, foreign and domestic, to alter these trade agreements. It is after all a Wall Street/Federal Reserve government that not even a well-intentioned billionaire president can change for the betterment of the 99 percenters.

      • AhiPoke says:

I’ve find it amazing that any democrat/liberal can cite the first amendment when they are the very ones that do not like free speech unless they agree with it. While there are always exceptions, it seems that liberals are usually the ones committing violent protests, that often include vandalism and looting. It’s also ironic that the democrats made it a big deal when Tromp wouldn’t unconditionally accept the results of the election when obviously, by these protests, many felt the same way. Hypocrits?

      • South76 says:

These are a bunch of sore losers; damaging other people’s properties is NOT part of the first amendment rights.

    • postmanx says:

Trump’s not signing the TPP! Do any other Liberals care?

    • bumbai says:

That is a theory. The reality is your goons are in the street rioting.

    • dragoninwater says:

Same S_T_U_P_I_D protesters like the 99% that had the anti 1% riots. No one cares about them or their lost cause because they studied liberal arts like Chicano Studies and Queer Rights that have become irrelevant in today’s high tech marketplace. They’ve sealed their own fate, the blue collar service jobs have all gone to the illegals and anchor babies that these nuts support. Then their loving Democrat party decided to outsource white collar jobs. In either case they’re F#$% by the party they support and vote for. Just take San Francisco for example, they already started to outsource white collar government office jobs to India! You Dems are BUFFOONS!

  2. Kalaheo1 says:

Hey, remember last week when these same people were excoriating Trump for saying he might not accept the results of the election and how by doing that, he was undermining the very basis of our democracy?

What ever happened to that narrative. It looks to me like these protesters hate democracy.

    • NanakuliBoss says:

Thank God Trump will spend $$$ to Make America Great. Rail and transportation will rule.

      • dragoninwater says:

While I was never against the rail, you damn well know that Mufi and Caldwell ripped us off with the scam accounting and shill delays costing us far more than any rail project of the face of this Earth! L.A. for example built the same 15 mile rail for a mere $2 billion! I certainly hope Trump comes in and has the feds investigate the entire rail project on Oahu and set the accounting straight because currently Krook Caldwell does not allow public access to see the expenditures or follow the money trail!

  3. paradisetax says:

I wasn’t a Trump supporter before the election. After seeing how the Liberals reacted to Trump’s victory I’m glad he won. Now it’s very easy to see how bigoted and elitist the Liberal Democratic party is. Trump will surely be better for the country than Hillary would have been.

  4. livinginhawaii says:

Am I reading this right that an anti Trump protestor shot a guy who confronted him or her?

  5. pakeheat says:

IRT Lisa Holmes who said I don’t want to live in a country where my friends aren’t included, so move out what are you waiting for?

  6. wave1 says:

Interesting how Obama was so swift to verbally attack the negative actions of police but says nothing to hillary’s and his demonstrators

    • meat says:

Just like BLM movement. Crickets. I think it would be safe to say that this FAKE president is enjoying every minute of it. The AP probably taking their from this clown too. Every article from the AP since the election covering the riots(not protests) seems to ENCOURAGE the rioters, not discourage them. Now they’re shooting people. Who’s the real deplorables now?

  7. raiderDogs says:

Again Liberals can’t follow through with their promises. What a great country we can be without those that promised to leave if Trump wins. We should be saying goodbye to Cher, Whoppie, Rosie and Miley, but like their person that they supported they lie to everyone and won’t leave.

  8. Cellodad says:

Do not approve. Does not help anyone. There’s a difference between free speech and the right to petition the government and trashing your own nest.

    • pohaku96744 says:

Rioters are playing right into the hands of conservatives. Rioters don’t dare leave Portland. Couple of trips south, notice the young kids driving around with the Dixie flag hanging out of their trucks, like ours with the Kanaka Maoli flag. Asked my daughter how many black kids in her school that she teaches at….. 2 total. Since then, gave her gun and taught her how to shoot. Lots of students are white poor people that think conservative.

    • dragoninwater says:

They’re from the same party you have been pumping so hard for for the last few months. You’re also the one that has been bashing Trump calling him a child rapist. Now you have the audacity to comment here that you do not approve of the minion rioters in your chosen political party? phhfffttt, go back to your school of destinction and read some more books. I don’t think you know the slightest bit of background and current events about the Democrats you so much support. BTW, since you love to bash the every party but yours, how do you feel abou the elected Democrats in San Francisco outsourcing white collar government jobs to India? haaaaa

  9. iwamasa says:

Poor babies. Didn’t get their way so now they’re throwing a temper tantrum. I wonder how many of these spoiled brats actually worked to try to elect the person they say should have won? Or did they even vote? Or are they just out there vandalizing other people’s property because the media or the rubbish they hear in schools has them fired up with paranoid fears? Or because Miley Cyrus and other celebrities were filled with angst and crying on the internet? Grow up people. I don’t like the guy we have in office now, but I haven’t been out protesting or crying about it, and certainly not destroying things that don’t belong to me. The voters have spoken. If you don’t like what they said, start working now to change their minds by the next election. I’ll even give you a helpful hint. Whatever your cause, associating it with the faces of petulant punks burning things down, or beating people up, will not help you gain support for it.

  10. wrightj says:

…and for us here in Hawaii, we just kinda roll over and play dead; duh, wot dat?

  11. SueH says:

The rampaging children are just sore losers that probably didn’t even vote. Sore losers?….Nah, just plain losers.

  12. meat says:

“It’s not that we’re sore losers”? Riiiiight. And now Odummy will be talking stink about Trump to European leaders too. Can we just kick this clown out now?

  13. Cricket_Amos says:

    “he’s racist, he’s sexist, he’s phobic, he’s misogynistic.”
    “racism, xenophobia and homophobia”

The standard mantra of those who are apparently incapable of critical thought and rational discourse.

    • bumbai says:

I believe the results of this election show just how tired people are of this phony mantra. When they are alone in the voting booth there are no liberal to yell at them.

    • AhiPoke says:

Trump won partly because he believed in law and order and Clinton did not. By seeing what as happened, it looks like many of her supporters also do not respect the law.

  14. buddy says:

TO: copperwire9 YOU ARE RIGHT. We do have the right to protest, (you folks berating him/her may want to brush up on your U.S. Constitution – google ACLU) especially when it is the election of a person totally incapable of carrying out the responsibilities of the U.S. Presidency. He can’t even respond to the protests in a consistent manner.
“Just had a very open and successful presidential election. Now professional protesters, incited by the media, are protesting. Very unfair! 4:19 PM – 10 Nov 2016” from Pres-elect Trump —- then five hours later
“Love the fact that the small groups of protesters last night have passion for our great country. We will all come together and be proud! 1:14 AM – 11 Nov 2016” from Pres-elect Trump
WHO IS THIS MAN? AND WILL HE EVER MAKE UP HIS MIND ABOUT ANYTHING????? other than his own checkbook

  15. justmyview371 says:

These protests are coming one after another representing one issue or another. It seems to be the new social gathering, but accomplishing nothing.

  16. MoiLee says:

“What are we Teaching our Children?”……I would like to see or hear what their parents have to say about this Violence! So? They end up losing ?In those states, including California ,now want to secede from the Union? Because they lost?
Did any of you see wide spread Riots like these when Obama Won in 2012? Negative!
    ….is it me or what?
I thought Democrat Liberals were all peace loving , Kumbaya,Compassionate, undersatnding, smart, Techy, College children in the whole world?…..is it me? Nay ,to me?
It looks like alot of spoiled children ,who forgot to change their diapers before leaving home. Yikes ! Diaper Rash! Haaaaaaaaa!
    Hey Parents listen up!
What ever you parents are doing ,by influencing your children to incite Violence is just plain Wrong! & Need to wise up and quick!

    Quote of the Day :
“Just Because something offends you, doesn’t mean you have the right to Hurt and Destroy”.

  17. calentura says:

Headline should read: “One shot in Oregon amid nationwide crime spree.”

  18. NanakuliBoss says:

    Wait till inauguration. Oh boy.

  19. WizardOfMoa says:

The cost and expenses to clean up after these protesters “rights” will affect their cities and state budgets! All these “educated people” can’t seem to comprehend their actions will come at a cost? Auwe!

    • dragoninwater says:

Educated? I wouldn’t consider someone taking Chicano Studies as educated. More like brain washed by Stalin style politically motivated teachers that were sponsored by the Fortune 500 firms to increase the low wage labor pool.

  20. lespark says:

Law and Order. Shoot to kill.

    • WalkoffBalk says:

n the criminal justice system, the people are represented by two separate yet equally important groups: the police, who investigate crime; and the district attorneys, who prosecute the offenders. These are their stories.

  21. MakaniKai says:

IMO we as Americans had two very poor choices before us as voters. People need to get a grip, if you don’t like it leave. What this nation needs is prayer for those who are suppose to lead our great nation.

Revisit civics class and realize the power and influence the congress has. Those who represent your state are of the utmost importance.

Hippie Generation has morphed into the present. Auwe!

  22. americantaxpayer says:

i do not remember the Right protesting when Obama was elected and most especially reelected.

  23. lespark says:

Never mind keaukaka . He’s small kaka. Where’s the big kaka, Klastri and Ikefromeli?

    • 64hoo says:

they are to embarrass to comment because they put there foot in there mouth, which is called foot in mouth disease they called all the people who only went to high school deplorable, and they were the smart ones who gave trump the presidency, so they will be back after there done crying over there spilt milk.

  24. Marauders_1959 says:

    “…..“burning projectiles” thrown at officers”

Police should pick up and throw burning projectiles back at the protesters.

  25. Ronin006 says:

I am angered and outraged by the rioting and destruction protestors and demonstrators are doing, but I am watching with great pleasure the massive mental and emotional break down liberals are having. Read this story from the New York Post: http://nypost.com/2016/11/11/scenes-from-the-liberal-meltdown/

  26. BigOpu says:

Rioting because a civil right was taken away or violated, sure. Rioting because you are on a losing end of a vote…idiots.
