Clinton reflects on loss, urges backers to ‘stay engaged’

ASSOCIATED PRESS

Hillary Clinton addressed the Children’s Defense Fund’s Beat the Odds celebration at the Newseum in Washington today.

WASHINGTON >> Hillary Clinton reflected on her devastating defeat today, acknowledging the difficulty of her loss for her supporters and urging them to persevere through the Donald Trump era.

In remarks that were equal parts pep talk and funeral dirge, Clinton encouraged her backers to “never, ever give up.”

“I know this isn’t easy. I know that over the past week a lot of people have asked themselves whether America is the country we thought it was,” Clinton said at the annual gala of the Children’s Defense Fund, the child advocacy organization where she started her legal career. “But please listen to me when I say this: America is worth it.”

She added: “It’s up to each and every one of us to keep working to make America better and stronger and fairer.”

Clinton never cited the president-elect by name in her remarks, making only an oblique reference to the controversial policies that fueled his rise to the White House.

Instead, she focused on the future, asking her backers to “stay engaged on every level.”

“We need you. America needs your energy,” she said.

Clinton’s surprising loss threw her party into a period of intense soul-searching, with an ascendant liberal wing blaming Clinton’s campaign for failing to embrace a more populist economic message. In private calls with donors and Democratic officials, Clinton has largely attributed her defeat to the decision by the FBI to reexamine her use of a private server as secretary of state.

In her remarks, Clinton offered no accounting for any failures she may have made during her presidential campaign, though she admitted that the past week hasn’t been easy.

“There have been a few times this past week when all I wanted to do was just to curl up with a good book or our dogs and never leave the house again,” she ruefully admitted.

She chose friendly ground to make her first public appearance since her emotional concession speech in New York City last Wednesday. Her first job out of law school in the 1970s was for Children’s Defense Fund founder Marian Wright Edelman. She later became a staff attorney and chairman of the group’s board.

Throughout her campaign, she cited her work for the group as her “north star,” sparking her interest in standing up against injustice toward children and families.

The group, which helps disadvantaged children, tried to return some of the affection on Wednesday night.

“We love her and we appreciate all the hard work she has done and say it’s not going to be for naught,” said Edelman, in her introductory remarks. “We’re going to say that she is the people’s president.”

Still, in a sign of Clinton’s new life as a private citizen, the event lacked many of the trappings of her presidential campaign. Security was light and she traveled with only a handful of aides.

Sprinkled throughout the small theater where she addressed donors and supporters were a handful of empty seats.

This lunatic should waddle her arse in front of a camera and tell the kids protesting to get back to work. Thank goodness she’s on the trashheap of history.

Wow. Don’t you guys ever have anything nice to say?

      • Waterman2 says:

Not about her. She is a crook , liar and thief. I could go on but I am actually a good guy. Hope they only put her in prison for aliiiiitle while . LOLL

        • Boots says:

Yet who is scheduled to appear in court soon? lol (The Donald). He is trying to run from this but hopefully he won’t be able to get away from it. Hillary was not my candidate but I sure prefer her to an incompetent fool who does nothing but lie, cheats and steals. Talk about crookedness, you haven’t seen anything yet. The Donald will surpass all past presidents when it comes to dishonesty.

But this is to be expected when you throw history and tradition out the window. And no you are not a good guy because you want to throw people in jail just because you disagree with them. Just curious do you know what conflict of interest is and why it is not a good thing to have one?

        • Kalaheo1 says:

Boots says: “And no you are not a good guy because you want to throw people in jail just because you disagree with them. Just curious do you know what conflict of interest is and why it is not a good thing to have one?”

This is one reason you guys got shellacked this last election cycle. Trying to ignore Hillary’s ethical and possibly legal lapses and the attacking people who are not willing to look the other way is hypocritical. You have already established you have two different standards of behavior based on whether a person has a “-D” after their name or not.

And when you talk about “conflicts of interest,” I assume you are talking about accepting large cash gifts by the Clinton Foundation while you are trying to get meetings and access to Secretary of State Clinton.

        • Boots says:

That is the point Kalaheo, we may have lost but it was hardly a shellacking. A shellacking would be an electoral vote win of say 370 PLUS 55% of the popular vote.
No I am not talking about Hillary, I am talking about your hero the Donald who refuses to separate himself from his business interests. I cannot remember a president who didn’t put their business interests into a blind trust. You don’t think this is a recipe for disaster? Just curious, what would be your reaction if Hillary won and said hell with a blind trust? She would manage her business in her spare time. This is what the Donald has basically said. Enjoy your corruption. You haven’t seen nothing yet.

        • Keonigohan says:

          Boots..you LOST…SUCK IT UP, BUTTERCUP.

Look, no one is arguing that Hillary didn’t do extremely well in California and New York.

But the rest of the country soundly rejected her.

      • st1d says:

jbob: it would be nice to see her behind bars, and not the vodka bar she fell into on election night.

        nice enough?

        • Boots says:

Another typically republican liar. Are you from Russia perhaps? Opponents there tend to just disappear.

        • Kalaheo1 says:

Oh no, not the “you don’t like Hillary Clinton; you must be a Russian hacker!” line. Didn’t you guys learn anything last week?

        • Keonigohan says:

JBF & boots..on election night when the realization that she LOST…they had to restrain her after she physically attacked Podesta & Mook…anymore nice things you want know?

Perfect comment. Aw shucks, this means the White House bathrooms will still have Men and Women signs on them. Right, better stay engaged so her America can prevail after that horrible male monster wrecks her and Barry’s agenda carrying out the paid objectives of a Hungarian madman. Maybe she could move to Saudi Arabia where they might let her marry into the royal Saud clan. I heard she is co writing a book with Barry – How to Fruck up a Perfectly Good Counry……..maybe she could become a congresswoman or senator from Hawaii, as she fits right in.

    • Boots says:

So typical of the wacko right. Still full of hatred for a woman. I understand. So much better to have a clown leading the country who will have countless conflicts of interests and who will embarrass the country on a daily basis. Just remember Peanuthead, a lot more people voted for Hillary than for the clown. I just remember how you clowns tried to dismiss Bill Clinton because he did not receive a majority of the popular vote. Your hypocrisy is just amazing. Will enjoy the countless conflicts of interests that will be occurring under the Trump presidency. But that is ok for the Donald to have such conflicts because he is a republican. Well, enjoy the groper in chief.

      • Kaneohe5 says:

Kids this is bill Clinton. Do you what being an ethical man i? Wait don’t sit on that carpet by that white spot stain.

      • Kalaheo1 says:

Boots says: “So typical of the wacko right. Still full of hatred for a woman.”

Just keep telling yourself that. Maybe you guys are happier marching in the street inside of holding office.

The only reason Hillary Clinton was the democrat nominee was because the DNC cheated Bernie Sanders, CNN fed her questions in advance for the debates, and your Super Delegates disenfranchised millions of voters. Then when resentment surged among typically (noncorporate) democrat voters, you accuse everyone of being sexist. Just keep doing that and enjoy your marches.

        • Boots says:

There is no doubt that the deck was staked in favor of Hillary but that is hardly cheating. Hillary has been involved for over 20 years and has formed many alliances within the democratic party. It was hard for many to go against those ties. I hardly call that cheating.

Cheating is when you throw thousands off the voting rolls just for being minorities or democrats. http://www.gregpalast.com

        • Keonigohan says:

boots…you LOST BIG LEAGUE…SHELLACKED..live with it and move on.
Where’s your buddy klastri (aka kauai…aka Kurton Kauai…and possibly new name “Vector”)?

        • Mythman says:

The DNC is going to put an openly muslim politician in charge replacing a covert muslim as head of the party. Hillary wasn’t a woman – she was only passing as one. The only real question for the Dem clones to answer is which bathroom did Hillary identify with. Is Jesse Jackson’s son still in the federal pen?

        • Kalaheo1 says:

Boots says: “There is no doubt that the deck was staked in favor of Hillary but that is hardly cheating.”

THE HEAD OF THE DNC FED HER THE DEBATE QUESTIONS IN ADVANCE for her debate against Bernie.

          That’s cheating.

How on earth you can pretend it is not is beyond me.

      • Windward_Side says:

You seem to be one of those persons that write blatantly ridiculous statements to get a reaction from people. Might you be suffering from Histrionic Personality Disorder or are you just an “attention wh0re”.

        • Boots says:

How is it ridiculous? Can you be specific?

Show me how having conflicts of interest will be good. Do you deny you republicans didn’t consider Bill Clinton to be a true president because he did not receive a majority of the popular vote? Time will tell how many corruption scandals the Donald will have but I will enjoy pointing out each one when they happen and asking what would republican reaction be if Hillary was president and did this.

I am only asking that republicans be consistent for a change. Impossible I know.

    • Keonigohan says:

hiLIARy should tell her protestors to SUCK IT UP, BUTTERCUP.
btw..she looks horrible….the lost aged her 10 years.

      • Boots says:

We shall see how the Donald looks after 4 years. Doesn’t look so hot now. Wonder if he will survive? I am betting he will die of a heart attack. Won’t be able to handle the stress.

  2. calentura says:

Wait a minute, did she say work to make America fairer…? So a cheat like her might have won the election..? Too funny.

  3. st1d says:

    what was her speaking fee?

    • raiderDogs says:

A free meal. Just about all she’s worth now.

    • DPK says:

Interesting question: how did the Clinton’s leave the White House in January 2001, after stating that they were “broke”, and amass estimates of $80 million in just 16 years?

      • Boots says:

That is petty cash compared to what the Donald will amass while he is in the white house. The new rule is that conflicts of interest no longer exist. So you want to gain favor with the US? Just pay full rates at a Trump Hotel and run up a huge bill.

The Donald might be the first president who will not put his holdings into a blind trust? But it is ok as it is ok for a republican to have conflicts of interests. Disgusting.

        • Kalaheo1 says:

Boots says: “So you want to gain favor with the US? Just pay full rates at a Trump Hotel and run up a huge bill.”

“So you want to gain favor with the US? Just make huge donations to the Clinton Foundation.”

Saudi Arabia donated $25 million, Saudi billionaire Sheikh Mohammed H. Al-Amoudi gave $10 million, and Qatar gave a million.

And here you are worrying that countries are going to try to win favor from President Trump by ordering room service and eating the Macadamia nuts out of the minibar.

        • Boots says:

Time will tell Kalaheo. Just remember Hillary has been investigated constantly and nothing has ever come out of them. Lets see how the Donald does. His court date is fast approaching. lol

I thought that when Christie was losing power it was probably because the Donald felt that Christie had too big a chance of being thrown into jail due to bridge gate. Rather it was because he threw his son in law’s father into jail for serious corruption. Should give you an idea of the Donald’s priorities.

        • Keonigohan says:

boots…jesse jackson asking your O to PARDON her….as you claim for what then if she’s innocent of anything?

        • Kalaheo1 says:

Boots says: “Time will tell Kalaheo. Just remember Hillary has been investigated constantly and nothing has ever come out of them. ”

Well, yes, President Obama’s Dept of Justice didn’t seem at interested in investigating his Secretary of State, especially as she was in line to carry on his legacy.

It will be interesting to see how these investigations go when she doesn’t have “more equal than others” in her favor.

        • Boots says:

Yes we shall see Kalaheo. I would not doubt that the republican will continue to waste tax payer dollars to go after her. After all the Clintons did something the republicans haven’t done for over 50 years. Enjoy your deficits. I know I will enjoy rubbing it in when they happen. 🙂

See, I have history on my side. Republicans just can’t help themselves. Spend and borrow is their motto. Deficits don’t matter.

My recommendation to Hillary is to move significantly further to the left. You didn’t promise enough giveaways. Beside the free college tuition that Bernie promised perhaps adding free cars, free cellphones, free housing, increased social security payments, free healthcare, free clothes, free TV’s, etc. Why don’t you just say everything is free and no work is required.
