Snow blanketed Mauna Kea Saturday, when an earlier winter storm warning was in effect.

Weather officials canceled the winter weather advisory for Hawaii island summits after radar and satellite imagery showed earlier freezing precipitation has ended.

The wind advisory remains in effect.

Update 6:30 a.m.

An earlier winter storm warning has been canceled, but a winter weather and wind advisories is in effect for the higher summits of Hawaii island this morning.

The potential for freezing drizzle and fog prompted forecasters at the National Weather Service to issue the winter weather advisory early this morning for Big Isle summits over 12,000 feet.

Winds of 25 to 45 mph with gusts up to 70 mph on summits above 8,000 feet prompted the wind advisory, which is in effect through 6 p.m.

Temperatures are expected to hover between the upper 20s to lower 30s, rising to the mid-30s around noon.

Weather officials warn of hazardous driving with up to a quarter-inch of ice on affected roads and visibility of less than a quarter-mile at times.

Previous coverage

The slopes of Hawaii island were under a winter storm warning today as several inches of snow were expected to fall this evening.

The warning is in effect until 6 a.m. Sunday for Big Island summits above 12,000 feet and above 8,000 feet on Mauna Loa and Mauna Kea, the National Weather Service said.

An upper-level disturbance was bringing moderate to heavy snow as it moved over the eastern part of the state.

Cameras on Mauna Kea showed snow covering the ground and poor visibility this afternoon.

Heavy, blowing and drifting snow and gusts of up to 45 mph were forecast for the area. Visibility was expected to be poor — at times falling below a quarter-mile.

Two to four inches of new snow was expected to fall this evening, with light snow possible after midnight, the Weather Service said.

Travel may be hazardous or impossible in the area, and summit visits should be postponed until conditions improve, the Weather Service said. Driving or hiking in the area can be very dangerous, and anyone camping in the area should consider moving to lower elevation.

Global warming my rosy red rectum. Is Weird Al Gore nearby? Every time the neurotic global warming crowd promotes their myth there is s sudden deep freeze.

It it NOT global warming but more accurately man made global climate change. Due to industrial greenhouse gsses, thr amount of ENERGY retained within by the closed environment of the earths atmosphere is imcreasing at an unnatural rate and the weather goes beyond just point in time temperature increases at any set location but increase in storm activity such as what is seen on Mauna Kea which his snow under high wind constions. The law of the conservation energy is that within a closed environment, energy neither be created or destroyed hust converted from one form to another and temperature or heat is just one form of energy, the main two others that will also negatively impact humans are kinetic and potential energy; such as Hawaii came off a hurricane season that had an unsually high number of near misses of some serious hurricanes. Asian and Carribean countires where not so fortunate and took some serious hurricane or typhoon direct hits. One of the highest energetic and devastating atmospheric events on earth is the hurricane /typhoon which is highly organized atmospheric gas spinning in a large circle with its kinetic energy as 1/2 times the mass of the gas times velocity squared (using the rotational velocity equivalent). Man made global climate change is REAL and although it will not be an extinction level event, many animal species and vulnerable human populations, like those who live in low lying hurricane prone zones and those who live at subsistence levels and cannot provide enough food for themsleves will perish.

If you expand your dilettante approach to science just a bit, you’ll be surprised to learn that there has never been a period of warmer climate (and there have been many) in earth history that has not been overwhelmingly beneficial to both plant and animal life. Don’t blindly fear change, accept, welcome, and embrace it!

Where’s all the protesters? Not working, I’ll bet on that.

And for another irrelevant news flash, it’s snowing in the Arctic, impacting a couple of people working there.
