English translation of Japanese internment memoir released

The Japanese Culture Center of Hawai‘i, publisher of “An Internment Odyssey: Haisho Tenten” by Suikei Furuya, will launch the book with an event at 11 a.m. Saturday, with copies for sale for $26.

Translated from Japanese into English by Tatsumi Hayashi, a JCCH volunteer, Furuya’s World War II memoir recounts in prose and poetry how he and others strove to live fully, with dignity, in the internment camps where he was imprisoned, from Sand Island in Hawaii to Montana, New Mexico and other states in a series of dislocations that covered 11,000 miles.

The free program is open to the public and will include a panel discussion with Hayashi, Sheila Chun, Brian Niiya and a member of the Furuya family, at the Japanese Cultural Center of Hawai‘i, 2454 S. Beretania St. For more information or to RSVP, call 945-7633 or email info@jcch.com.
