A 16-year-old Kaneohe boy was taken to a hospital in critical condition after he struck his head on the roadway while trying to retrieve his hat in Kaneohe.

At about 10:25 a.m. Tuesday, police said the teen was seated in the bed of a pickup truck traveling eastbound on Keana Road when his hat flew off his head and landed on the roadway.

When the teen jumped out of the moving truck in an attempt to retrieve it, he lost his footing and struck his head and back on the roadway.
