Ax-wielding man threatens 2 in Mapunapuna, police say

Police arrested a 44-year-old man after he allegedly brandished an ax and threatened to kill a man and a woman in Mapunapuna.

At about 6:40 a.m. Monday in the industrial area of Mapunapuna, police said the victims — a 36-year-old woman and a 44-year-old man — were sitting inside a parked vehicle when the suspect approached them brandishing an ax.

The suspect threatened to kill them and shattered a vehicle window.

Police said the male victim retrieved a dangerous instrument from his vehicle and confronted the suspect. A struggle ensued when both men sustained injuries.

The male suspect fled before police arrived. Police said the male victim suffered a laceration on his forearm.

Police later located the male suspect at a hospital where he was being treated for lacerations and arrested him on suspicion of first-degree terroristic threatening, first-degree criminal property damage, unauthorized entry into a motor vehicle, second-degree assault, and abuse of a family or household member.

The investigation is ongoing.
