Moped rider critically injured in crash

A 25-year-old Honolulu man remained in critical condition Monday after he slammed into a rock wall while riding a moped in Haleiwa.

At about 4:20 p.m. Sunday, police said, the man was traveling west on Kamehameha Highway fronting Haleiwa Beach Park on a moped when he drove off the roadway and onto the grassy shoulder area in an effort to pass vehicles that were stopped in traffic.

The rider lost control, was thrown from the moped and struck a rock wall adjacent to the shoulder. Emergency Medical Services said the man suffered head injuries and was transported in critical condition to the hospital.

He was not wearing a helmet. Police said he was operating at a speed that “was too high for the rough condition of the shoulder area.”

It’s unknown whether drugs or alcohol were involved.
