California man dies after being struck by wave on Lanai

A 66-year-old California man has died after he was struck by a large wave and found unresponsive in the water at Hulupoe Beach on Lanai.

His name has yet to be released.

Sometime before 1:44 p.m. Monday, the man, who was a part-time resident of Lanai, was playing in the shorebreak at the beach fronting the Four Seasons Resort Lanai with a younger family member when a large wave struck them.

The Maui Fire Department said the man failed to reappear after the wave passed. Bystanders eventually spotted him floating face down in the water.

They pulled him to shore and immediately performed CPR until firefighters and paramedics arrived.

Paramedics administered advanced life support measures but efforts to revive him were unsuccessful. The fire department said he was pronounced dead at the scene.
