Fire destroys Kohala home

Hawaii County firefighters extinguished a fire that destroyed a home in North Kohala.

At about 7 p.m. Sunday, firefighters responded to a call of a structure fire at an old single-family home located on agricultural land on Kapaau Road at about 7 p.m. Sunday.

When they arrived, they observed the home collapsing from the fire that fully engulfed the structure.

The fire also caused multiple propane tanks on the property to explode and arcing power lines to fall to the ground, according to the Hawaii County Fire Department.

Firefighters brought the fire under control at 10 p.m. and extinguished it at 11:30 p.m. The home was unoccupied at the time of the fire.

The cause of the fire is under investigation and a damage estimate has yet to be determined.
