Police track down, arrest car theft suspect

Police arrested a 22-year-old man after he allegedly struck two police vehicles with a stolen vehicle he was operating in Kaneohe.

Police said they attempted to pull over a suspect in a stolen vehicle at about 4:30 p.m. Aug. 22, but the suspect struck the police vehicles and fled.

On Wednesday, police said they located the suspect at a home on Laakea Street in Salt Lake. He fled on foot, breaking into a home next door in an attempt to dodge police, but was captured there. He was arrested on suspicion of unauthorized control of a propelled vehicle, two counts of first-degree criminal property damage, first-degree burglary and three outstanding warrants.

The suspect’s girlfriend, 26, was arrested on suspicion of hindering prosecution.

HECO investigates cause of manhole fire

Hawaiian Electric Co. is investigating the cause of an early morning electrical fire that occurred Thursday in Iwilei.

Honolulu firefighters responded to a call about a fire inside a manhole on Alakawa Street near Home Depot at about 4 a.m. The area was cordoned off, and firefighters turned over the scene to Hawaiian Electric Co. by 5:45 a.m., Honolulu Fire spokesman Capt. David Jenkins said.

Fran Mareko, assistant store manager at Home Depot, said sales associates had observed flames and smoke emerging from the manhole. Police closed a section of Alakawa Street between Best Buy and Home Depot at about 4:30 a.m.

HECO spokeswoman Shannon Tangonan said a downed power line on Kuwili Street in Iwilei that was linked to the fire was repaired.

A power outage affected about 155 customers on Dillingham Boulevard, Nimitz Highway and Pacific Street.

Police reopened Alakawa Street near Best Buy just after 7:20 a.m. after a HECO crew completed repairs. Power was restored to all affected customers shortly after 8:35 a.m.
