Two bills proposing a ban on the use of polystyrene foam by vendors are on the agenda this week for the islands of Oahu and Hawaii island.

Bill 71, introduced by City Councilwoman Kymberly Pine, is scheduled for a hearing before the Honolulu City Council on Wednesday. The bill prohibits food vendors and packagers from using containers made of expanded polystyrene foam, with exemptions for those who face undue hardships.

On Hawaii island, Bill 13, introduced by County Councilwoman Eileen O’Hara, ending the use of polystyrene containers by food vendors, is scheduled for a hearing by the Hawaii County Council Thursday morning. The bill would prohibit food vendors from dispensing prepared food in disposable polystyrene food beginning July 2019, but exempt ice coolers and packaging for raw meat, fish and eggs.
