Highway 11 in Kau reopens after fatal crash
One person was killed in a two-vehicle crash in Kau early today.
Police and firefighters responded to the collision on Highway 11 near the 47-mile marker shortly after 3:30 a.m. Police said a cargo truck was struck head-on by a sedan on the roadway.
Firefighters extinguished a fire that fully engulfed the sedan. After the fire was extinguished, they discovered a burned body of an individual in the driver’s seat.
The truck was observed laying its side at the scene, blocking the roadway. According to the Hawaii County Fire Department, the truck driver exited the vehicle on his own.
Police closed the highway to investigate and re-opened it sometime before 9:30 a.m.
