Visitor in critical condition after being found floating off Maui

A 66-year-old California man was transported to a hospital in critical condition after he was found unresponsive in waters off West Maui.

Shortly after 2:35 p.m. Tuesday, fire rescue responded to a call of a snorkeler found floating face down and unresponsive in the ocean by a family member.

He was found approximately 10 feet from the shoreline fronting the Sands of Kahana Condominium on Lower Honoapiilani Road, according to the Maui Fire Department.

Bystanders helped bring the visitor to shore and performed CPR until a police officer arrived and took over.

The fire department said paramedics and firefighters arrived quickly and continued advanced life-saving measures.
