No tsunami threat to Hawaii after major quake off New Caledonia

There is no tsunami threat to Hawaii after a magnitude 7 earthquake struck this afternoon in the Loyalty Islands in the South Pacific, the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said.

However, a tsunami threat exists for parts of the Pacific located closer to the quake, the center said.

The earthquake occurred at 12:44 p.m. Hawaii time.

The U.S. Geological Survey said the quake originated at a depth of about 6 miles and about 51 miles east-northeast of Tadine, New Caledonia.
