Man in critical condition after rescue off Maui

A 58-year-old Waiehu man was in critical condition on Saturday after he was rescued from waters off of Papalaua Wayside Park in Ukumehame.

According to a Maui Fire Department report, the man was spearfishing about 100 yards offshore when he began waving his arms in distress. Two people on the beach used bodyboards to reach the man, who had lost consciousness, and bring him back to shore.

Witnesses performed CPR on the man until paramedics and firefighters arrived. Paramedics continued CPR until the man regained a pulse.

The man was transported to Maui Memorial Medical Center in critical condition.
