Police suspect body found in Hilo Bay is missing California man

Hawaii island firefighters have recovered a body of a man along the coastline of Hilo Bay.

The partially decomposed body was recovered just before 1:40 p.m. Friday, about 35 feet below a cliff in Wainaku. The fire department airlifted the body to Hilo Medical Center.

An autopsy is expected to be conducted to determine the exact cause of death.

Police suspect the man could be George Novinger, husband of Gladys Novinger of Spring Valley, Calif.

The couple were crossing Wailuku River above Rainbow Falls on Nov. 25 when they fell, went over the falls and got caught in the current.

Gladys Novinger was found Saturday afternoon.

Firefighters conducted a shoreline search for her husband.

Alan Richmond, spokesman for the Hawaii Police Department, said, “The body could be him but we’re waiting for positive identification.”
