Hale Ekahi Drive in Waianae was the scene of a shooting early this morning that left one man in serious condition.

Honolulu police opened an attempted murder investigation after a teen was shot in the back by masked gunmen in Waianae early today.

At about 1:50 a.m. on the 86-900 block of Hale Ekahi Drive, a 19-year-old man was standing outside with a group of people when a vehicle approached them. About four to five suspects wearing masks exited the vehicle and fired multiple gunshots at the group, police said.

City Emergency Medical Services said the 19-year-old man sustained a gunshot wound to the back and was treated and transported in serious condition to a trauma center.

Police said they think the shooting is linked to an altercation that officers responded to on Alamihi Street, a road that intersects Hale Ekahi Street, at about 10:45 p.m. Thursday.
