Maui’s Hoeft leads Portland past Rainbow Wahine

University of Hawaii’s Reyn “Tita” Akiu (7) went for the ball at tonight’s game against the Portland Pilots.

Seabury Hall graduate Shayla Hoeft put down 16 kills and Portland remained undefeated as the junior middle helped the Pilots hold off Hawaii 19-25, 25-11, 25-18, 20-25, 15-8 tonight in the 24th Outrigger Volleyball Challenge at the Stan Sheriff Center.

Sophomore hitter Izzy Guzik and senior hitter Reghan Pukis each had 15 kills for the Pilots (8-0), who outblocked the Wahine 14-5 . Portland concludes its tournament visit against Idaho at 3 p.m. Saturday.

The Vandals (5-3) handed San Diego State its sixth straight loss, defeating the Aztecs (1-7) in today’s first match 25-19, 20-25, 30-28, 25-14.

Junior setter-hitter Norene Iosia led Hawaii (3-3) with her first career triple-double with 15 kills, 14 assists and 13 digs.

Senior hitter McKenna Granato added 15 kills and junior middle Natasha Burns 10.

The Aztecs and Wahine meet in Sunday’s 5 p.m. finale, a match that pits two Hawaii All-Americans and Olympians as head coaches: SDSU’s Deitre Collins-Parker and Hawaii’s Robyn Ah Mow-Santos.
