Car thieves nabbed in Hawaiian Beaches on Big Island

A Hawaiian Beaches couple is in police custody after they tried to steal a truck today and threatened the owner when he caught them in the act before fleeing the scene, police said.

Jason Balai, 53, was charged with unauthorized entry to a motor vehicle, theft, unauthorized control of a propelled vehicle, attempted robbery in the second degree and is being held in lieu of $55,000 bail.

Juanita Grammer, 29, was charged with two counts of reckless endangering, two counts of terroristic threatening, criminal property damage, being an accomplice to the robbery in the second degree and is being held in lieu of $72,000 bail.

According to police, the female suspect rammed the back end of the victim’s vehicle after the owner attempted to stop the thief from leaving the area. Both of the suspects allegedly threatened the victim and another witness before taking off.

Police apprehended the two during a search of the immediate area.
