UCSB sweeps Rainbow Wahine volleyball team
Junior hitter Lindsey Ruddins put down a match-high 11 kills and UC Santa Barbara all but ended Hawaii’s Big West volleyball title hopes with a 28-26, 25-22, 25-21 victory tonight at the Stan Sheriff Center.
It was the first time that a Big West opponent swept Hawaii (14-6, 10-2) at home since Long Beach State won 15-2, 15-6, 15-8 in Klum Gym in 1993. It was the first time a conference opponent swept the Wahine at the Stan Sheriff Center since New Mexico State in 2008, when Hawaii was in the Western Athletic Conference.
Freshman hitter Gigi Ruddins added 10 kills for the Gauchos (14-9, 6-5), who won in Honolulu for the first time since 2013.
Junior hitter McKenna Ross led Hawaii with nine kills. Senior libero Tita Akiu and junior hitter-setter Norene Iosia each had 11 digs.
Hawaii won the dig war 56-51 but lost the block battle 10-8.
The Wahine leave for their final conference road trip and will play at Cal State Northridge on Friday and Long Beach State on Saturday.
