Rainbow Wahine volleyball loses in 5 at Pepperdine
Senior hitter McKenna Granato had her 11th double-double of the season, but it was not enough as Hawaii dropped a critical nonconference volleyball match tonight, falling to Pepperdine 25-19, 20-25, 25-22, 18-25, 15-6 in Malibu, Calif.
Granato finished with 12 kills and 11 digs for the Rainbow Wahine (16-8), who had defeated the Waves in their previous 13 meetings dating back to 1997. Freshman middle Kamalei Krug came off the bench to tie her career high with seven kills and notch a career-best five blocks for Hawaii, now 3-3 in five-setters.
The Wahine led 22-18 in Set 3, only to see the Waves score seven unanswered, including five aces by senior hitter Heidi Dyer. Junior hitter Hannah Frohling finished with a match-high 18 kills and Dyer added 15 for Pepperdine (17-8), which opened Set 5 on a 7-1 run and never looked back.
Junior libero Hana Lishman (Punahou) had a match-high 17 digs for the Waves.
Hawaii senior libero Tita Akiu had 15 digs.
The Wahine return home and will conclude the regular season with Big West matches Nov. 15 against UC Irvine and Nov. 16 with UC Davis.
