Honolulu firefighters determine $30K fire damage to Waipahu building an accident
The Honolulu Fire Department on Friday concluded a fire, costing $30,000 in damage, was accidentally ignited at a unit inside a two-story apartment building in Waipahu.
The residents accidentally stored combustibles on a stove top with the burner turned on, according to Honolulu Fire Captain Scot Seguirant.
Twenty-three firefighters on Dec. 27 responded 2:31 p.m. to a fire at Royal Kunia Gardens, 94-986 Hanauna St. Firefighters discovered smoke coming out of the front of the second-floor unit. A maintenance worker tried to alert the unit’s residents. The adult male, adult female and a toddler were not at home when the fire broke out.
The worker then rescued a dog in the unit, while firefighters rescued the second dog. Both pets were not injured.
Firefighters extinguished the fire at 3:10 p.m. “The HFD asks the public not to store combustibles on their stove top,” Seguirant said in an email. “Many stove fires could be prevented by practicing this simple tip.”
The fire damage was estimated at $25,000 to the structure and $5,000 to its contents, said Seguirant in an email. No injuries were reported for the incident.
