More officers on duty tonight as HPD ramps up fireworks enforcement
Beware if you’re thinking of ringing in the New Year with illegal fireworks.
The Honolulu Police Department are out in full force, increasing its officer staffing tonight in anticipation of such activity, HPD spokeswoman Michelle Yu said this afternoon.
Police have already arrested adults and a minor and issued numerous citations.
Police received from Dec. 1 more than 1,500 fireworks-related 911 calls, according to a tally shared with the media just before 1 p.m. New Year’s Eve.
They issued citations to 13 adults and eight minors.
Police also arrested two adults and one minor suspected of fireworks0-related felony cases.

In one of the felony cases, police arrested a 39-year-old man shortly after midnight on Dec. 22 on suspicion of felony possession of fireworks.
He was reportedly seen in possession of illegal fireworks, Yu said. He was released Dec. 24 pending further investigation.
